CHAPLAINCY SA
Welcome to Chaplaincy SA, a nationally recognized, independent, self-regulated and registered Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in South Africa. We exist to develop, equip, support and mobilize Chaplains, Pastors, Ministry Leaders, Trauma Responders, First Responders and volunteers who are committed to serving people with compassion, professionalism, integrity and purpose. Our calling is clear: to take compassionate service beyond the walls of the church and into the places where people need it most. We serve individuals, families, First Responders, organizations and communities during times of crisis, trauma, grief, loss, hardship, vulnerability and emergency. Chaplaincy SA brings together a growing national network of people from different churches, denominations, ministries, cultures, communities and professional backgrounds. While our members may come from different traditions and environments, they are united by a shared commitment to serve humanity, strengthen communities and bring hope into difficult situations.
COMPASSION IN ACTION
For Chaplaincy SA, compassion is more than a message, it is a responsibility demonstrated through action. Our members serve during some of life’s most difficult moments, including serious accidents, bereavement, hospitalization, disasters, family crises, violence, suicide-related incidents, emergency scenes, community emergencies, trauma and other situations where people may urgently require emotional, spiritual, pastoral or practical support. Our Chaplains are trained to provide a calm, compassionate and professional presence. They listen. They support. They encourage. They pray where appropriate. They provide free pastoral assistance, crisis support, practical guidance, referral and follow-up while respecting the responsibilities and professional boundaries of emergency services, healthcare professionals, law-enforcement agencies, social workers, counsellors and other qualified service providers. We do not seek to replace professional services. We seek to strengthen the network of care surrounding the person in crisis.
WORKING TOGETHER TO SERVE BETTER
Chaplaincy SA believes that effective community service is built through cooperation. We therefore work alongside local churches, ministries, First Responders, emergency services, government structures, healthcare providers, welfare organizations, private organizations, community structures and other relevant support networks. Our strength lies not only in what we do individually, but in our ability to work responsibly with others toward a common objective: the protection, support, dignity and well-being of people and communities.
EVERYONE IS WELCOME
Chaplaincy SA welcomes people from all churches, denominations, ministries and congregations who share our commitment to compassionate service and who meet the applicable organizational, training and conduct requirements. Membership is not limited to one church, denomination or ministry tradition. We believe that Chaplaincy should build bridges, encourage cooperation and create opportunities for people to serve beyond the boundaries of their own congregations. Chaplaincy SA does not exist to compete with or replace the local church. We seek to work alongside churches and ministries, helping trained Chaplains take pastoral care, compassion and practical support into hospitals, emergency environments, communities, care facilities and other places where people may be facing crisis or hardship.
SOUTH AFRICAN CITIZENSHIP IS NOT A REQUIREMENT
A person does not have to be a South African citizen to enquire about membership, training or involvement with Chaplaincy SA. Applicants from other nationalities are welcome, subject to applicable legal, identification, membership, training and organizational requirements. South Africa is a Rainbow Nation, and Chaplaincy SA values the diversity of the people and communities we serve. Different cultures, languages, nationalities and backgrounds should never become barriers to compassionate service. Every person we encounter should be treated with dignity, humanity, fairness, compassion and respect.
A NATIONAL VISION FOR CHAPLAINCY
Chaplaincy SA is committed to developing a strong, disciplined and responsible national chaplaincy network capable of serving communities throughout South Africa. Through structured training, leadership development, practical preparation, specialist units, ongoing education and organizational support, we work to equip Chaplains and Responders to serve confidently and responsibly in real-world environments. Our areas of service and development include Community Chaplaincy, First Responder Support, Trauma Response, Emergency Scene Support, Hospital Chaplaincy, Hospice and Palliative Support, Bereavement Care, Crisis Intervention, Family Support, Community Outreach, Disaster Support, pastoral care and a broad range of specialist chaplaincy services. Our responsibility does not end when the immediate crisis is over. Where appropriate, Chaplains assist individuals and families through follow-up, referral and connection with relevant professional, healthcare, welfare, community and faith-based support services.
GOVERNANCE, ACCOUNTABILITY AND PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS
Chaplaincy SA operates through an established leadership and governance structure under the oversight of its Executive Board of Directors. The Board is responsible for providing strategic leadership, organizational oversight, accountability, policy direction, training standards, operational development and responsible stewardship of the organization’s programs and resources. Our national leadership structure exists to promote consistency, accountability, discipline, ethical conduct, clear lines of responsibility and professional service delivery throughout Chaplaincy SA. Members are expected to understand their roles, respect the chain of command, operate within the limits of their training and authority, protect confidentiality, maintain professional boundaries and uphold the standards and values of Chaplaincy SA at all times.
PARTNERSHIPS AND COOPERATION
Chaplaincy SA works with various organizations and other chaplaincies through partnerships and Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs), strengthening cooperation, training, leadership development, and community support. Our partnership with Chaplaincy Africa, alongside cooperation with other chaplaincies, extends this vision beyond South Africa’s borders, helping to develop, support, and connect chaplains across the African continent. Together, we strive to advance chaplaincy ministry rooted in professionalism, compassion, and integrity. Our mission begins in local communities, while our broader vision is to contribute to a strong, sustainable chaplaincy movement that brings hope and compassionate support wherever people are hurting.

Our Mission Is to:
• Train and equip Chaplains, First Responders, Counsellors, Social Workers, Trauma Responders, and support professionals to serve effectively in times of crisis
• Provide compassionate support to individuals, families, First Responders, and communities facing trauma, grief, loss, disaster, and hardship.
• Strengthen communities through professional, ethical, and responsible support services.
• Promote cooperation between Chaplaincy personnel, emergency services, healthcare professionals, social services, and community organizations.
• Support those who serve by providing care, guidance, trauma support, and referral for First Responders and frontline personnel.
• Develop skilled leaders who can serve with integrity, discipline, accountability, and compassion.

• Connect people with the right help through responsible referral, follow-up, and multidisciplinary cooperation.
